In this month’s newsletter, we discuss year-end planning and the Buffet Indicator
We hope you and your family are enjoying the fall!
On this month’s podcast, Liz Garvey and Beth Parker discuss the key year-end planning topics to have on your radar. As always, we invite you to connect with our team if you’d like help on any of the topics we discussed.
The “Buffet Indicator” compares the total market cap of the U.S. stock market to U.S. GDP. The higher the value, the more expensive U.S. stocks are relative to economic output.
This indicator can be tracked over time, and historically, higher readings on the Buffet Indicator are correlated with lower forward-looking returns. Conversely, lower readings on the Buffet Indicator tend to correlate with higher forward-looking returns.
This chart shows the projected annualized market returns — as suggested by the Buffet Indicator — for 26 developed and emerging markets. This is just one of many ratios tracking the market, so take the exact projections with a sizeable grain of salt.
However, the key takeaway is this: Emerging markets have lower valuations today than their developed market counterparts, meaning they could hold opportunities for the value investor.
