Most equity markets have de-rated anywhere from 20-40% from their 2021 peaks, and we are considerably closer to where we started the year. The recent de-rating was almost entirely due to multiple compression rather than a decline in earnings. Earnings have grown low single digits ex-energy, and even if earnings fall on weaker economic activity, the downside may not be as dramatic from here as equity multiples don’t look quite as demanding.
