Many of today's start-ups rely on the gig economy to lower their overhead costs, eschewing full-time employees in favor of independent contractors with little (or no) employee protections. More and more start-ups are failing to meet the lofty expectations they've set for themselves; as this New York Times article explains, the contractors often bear the brunt of those failures.
