Few things are more emotionally challenging than the death of a spouse—and if that spouse was responsible for all the household financial decisions, things can become even more difficult for the surviving partner. The complexities of estate taxes can be hard to navigate, especially for someone who has no experience with the family finances. And women (who account for two-thirds of surviving spouses) are disproportionately affected, as this Wall Street Journal article explains.
